Title: English Wild Flowers
Author: J T Burgess
Publisher: Frederick Warne
Price: 45.00
Description:
This is a book to be kept with care as it is in a very poor condition, but particularly interesting and knowledgeable. Included are a few pages descriptive of the different forms of roots, leaves, flowers and flower-stems, together with a brief summary of the principles of classification adopted by botanists in order that those who wish to collect specimens of the wild flowers for an herbarium may have some guide... they will be assisted by the index where in addition to the common and scientific name of the flowers are added their natural order, together with the season and where they bloom.. No real illustration but a few sketches within the book ...it is a serious book. 180 pages including the index. The complete title will be English wild flowers to be found by the wayside, fields, hedgerows, rivers, moorlands, meadows, mountains and sea-shores with practical illustrations. The book certainly stayed a bit too long in a naturalist's pocket as it is badly bent , and has tendency to break open, the spine being seriously damaged... it also has lot of pencil markings showing it certainly belong to a serious botanist .!

Title: The Game Keeper at Home
Author: Richard Jefferies
Publisher: Smith, Elder and Co
Price: 45.00
Description:
Sketches of Natural History and Rural Life with illustrations by Charles Whymper. First new edition. Those who delight in roaming about amongst the fields and lanes, or have spent any time in a country house, can hardly have failed to notice the custodian of the woods and covers, or to observe that he is often something of a “character.” The Gamekeeper forms, indeed, so prominent a figure in rural life as almost to demand some biographical record of his work and ways. From the man to the territories over which he bears sway—the meadows, woods, and streams—and to his subjects, their furred and feathered inhabitants, is a natural transition. The enemies against whom he wages incessant warfare—vermin, poachers, and trespassers—must, of course, be included in such a survey. Although, for ease and convenience of illustration, the character of a particular Keeper has been used as a nucleus about which to arrange materials that would otherwise have lacked a connecting link, the facts here collected are really entirely derived from original observation. John Richard Jefferies (6 November 1848 – 14 August 1887) was an English nature writer, noted for his depiction of English rural life in essays, books of natural history, and novels. His childhood on a small Wiltshire farm had a great influence on him and provides the background to all his major works of fiction. Jefferies's corpus of writings covers a range of genres and topics, including Bevis (1882), a classic children's book, and After London (1885), a work of science fiction. For much of his adult life he suffered from tuberculosis, and his struggles with the illness and with poverty also play a role in his writing. Jefferies valued and cultivated an intensity of feeling in his experience of the world around him, a cultivation that he describes in detail in The Story of My Heart (1883). This work, an introspective depiction of his thoughts and feelings about the world, gained him the reputation of a nature mystic at the time, but it is his success in conveying his awareness of nature and people within it, both in his fiction and in essay collections such as The Amateur Poacher (1879) and Round About a Great Estate (1880), that has drawn most admirers. Walter Besant wrote of his reaction on first reading Jefferies: "Why, we must have been blind all our lives; here were the most wonderful things possible going on under our very noses, but we saw them not." This is an older book , hard cover with a dark green cloth cover decorated with a hunter in gold on the front and name of author and title again in gold on the spne, no dust jacket . Condition good, , normal wear and use but no damages , no writing or marking through the book , 221 pages , some quality illustrations by Charles Whymper.

Title: The Alhambra illustrated by Joseph Pennell
Author: Washington Irving
Publisher: MacMillan
Price: 50.00
Description:
This edition of The Alhambra, the 1908 edition, complete with illustrations by Joseph Pennell, presents a welcome opportunity to reassess Irving's European writings. It is not possible to forget Washington Irving in the Alhambra. With a single volume, the simple, gentle, kindly American man of letters became no less a figure in the Moor's Red Palace than Boabdil and Lindaraxa of whom he wrote. And yet, never perhaps did a book make so unconscious a bid for popularity. Irving visited Granada in 1828. He returned the following year, when the Governor's apartments in the Alhambra were lent to him as lodgings. There he spent several weeks, his love for the place growing with every day and hour. It was this affection, and no more complex motive, that prompted him to describe its courts and gardens and to record its legends. The work was the amusement of his leisure moments, filling the interval between the completion of one serious, and now all but unknown, history and the beginning of the next. Title: Fanshen A Documentary of Revolution in a Chinese village
Author: William Hinton
Publisher: Vintage
Price: 35.00
Description:
anshen: A Documentary of Revolution in a Chinese Village is a 1966 book by William H. Hinton that describes the land-reform campaign during the Chinese Civil War conducted from 1945 to 1948 by the Chinese Communist Party in "Long Bow Village" (the name used in the book for the village of Zhangzhuangcun in Shanxi province). Hinton lived in the village in spring and summer of 1948 and witnessed scenes described in the book and recreates earlier events based on local records and interviews with participants. He explains party strategy to present the campaign's successes in building a revolutionary consciousness and a power-base among the poor peasants, but also its errors and excesses, especially the violence toward rich peasants and landlords. Fanshen has been compared to Edgar Snow's Red Star Over China and characterized as "perhaps the book that most changed American cold war perceptions of the Chinese Revolution. More than forty years after its initial publication, William Hinton’s Fanshen continues to be the essential volume for those fascinated with China’s revolutionary process of rural reform and social change. A pioneering work, Fanshen is a marvelous and revealing look into life in the Chinese countryside, where tradition and modernity have had both a complimentary and caustic relationship in the years since the Chinese Communist Party first came to power. It is a rare, concrete record of social struggle and transformation, as witnessed by a participant. Fanshen continues to offer profound insight into the lives of peasants and China’s complex social processes. Rediscover this classic volume, which includes a new preface by Fred Magdoff. the book is an older used book in good condition .. paperback , no dust jacket , clean and solid , spine is very good, one big crease on the cover, no writing, spoiling or defacing , on this thick book , 637 pages including index. great reading.

Beginning with the huge rifts of prehistoric times that tore New Zealand's parental land mass away from the supercontinent of Gondwana, the book traces the arrival of the first Polynesian canoes, the exploration and subsequent settlement by Europeans and goes on to outline the conflict engendered by the ensuing cross-cultural encounters. The country’s modern-day social, economic and political achievements are then analysed in Philip Temple’s lively and lyrical account of the growth of this remarkable country. Condition: Very Good. . Hardcover. Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1948; 3rd completely revised, enlarged edition. with dust cover in fair condition (small tears), slightly scuffed but with original price; red cloth in mint condition; xii+302pp incl index, 31 plates, 69 drawings, maps, or plans. This book supplies the general reader with an account of what is known of London during the five centuries when it was the capital of the Roman province of Britain. It not only provides a summary of the results of archaeological and historical research down to the present day but it gives a continuous account of the life, commerce and government of the city from the time when only a very small and primitive community inhabited its site, through the period of its greatness as Londinium, the famous mart that had been renamed Augusta, down to the last view which history affords of the strongly-walled and bastioned city-state holding its own through the dark days when the Roman Empire was crumbling. Major Home's narrative, which is lavishly illustrated with plans, drawings, reconstructions, and photographs of the actual Roman remains, includes also an interesting suggestion for rebuilding part of the bombed central area so as to reveal permanently the length of the bastioned wall and ditch, which once formed part of Londinium's defences, and which was uncovered during the clearing-up after the blitz.Great book for the historian as well as the tourist or local interested in the Past .... some notes on back end papers.

Title: A Natural History of Man in Britain
Author: H J Fleure
Publisher: Collins
Price: 45.00
Description:
One of the aims of this series is to present a comprehensive survey of our natural history in relation to its background and environment. A first and vital consideration in a project of over fifty volumes is the study of man himself through the ages, against the very varied natural conditions afforded by the British Isles. A NATURAL HISTORY OF MAN IN BRITAIN is such a study. In the words of the editors, "we believe that it will contribute much to the outlook of man as one with nature, that alone can save our beautiful islands from wrongful changes, from the degradation and destruction which may result equally from unplanned development as from wrongly conceived planning." Surely no man, by academic training and subsequent studies, is so well fitted to undertake a review of this vast and complex field as Professor Fleure. His long association with the University of Wales at Aberystwyth and his later connection with the University of Manchester have given him distinctive viewpoints. It is now more than thirty years since he published his Human Geography in Western Europe and more than twenty years since, with the late H.J. Peake, he began that remarkable series of volumes, the Corridors of Time. We owe this book to a perfect combination of historian, anthropologist, geographer and naturalist. It is the fruit of a lifetime's gathering. The book is in good condition with fair dust jacket , usual tears, priced cut and looking a bit tired .... the book itself in green cloth cover is in good condition , name of author and title in gold letters on the spine , 38 plates in color and 38 plates in black and white , mostly photographs, and 76 line drawings by Alison Birch. .349 pages including index .... a very good book .
