Title: Bacon Essays and Colours of Good and Evil
Author: Francis Bacon ? Aldis Wright
Publisher: MacMillan
Price: 200.00
Description:
This is a beautiful book , given as a Prize for French at the Royal Grammar School O Newcatle-on-Tyne on the year 1923-24 . Burgundy Leather bound , (no dust jacket) , with the coat of armour of the School in gold print on the cover, same gold letters for the title and author name on the spine.Gold also for the top of the pages .... The book is as new, absolutely perfect , except of course for the label of the prize nomination inside the back cover on the marbelized end papers. Inside of the book is fine , 388 pages including a Glossary. the text here comprises Bacon's "collections of reflections and generalizations and extracts from previous authors, woven together . . . into counsels for the successful conduct of life, and the management of men." Some of the essays "deal with questions of state policy, . . . some with personal conduct, . . . some on abstract subjects such as 'Truth,' 'Death,' and 'Unity' . . . [and] some reveal Bacon's delight in Nature, such as the pleasant essay 'Of Gardens.'" Day says that "in Bacon's hand the essay is an impersonal gem of worldly wisdom," and most of the essays reflect an intention to provide "cold-blooded instruction on how to get ahead in life." In short incisive prose modeled after Tacitus, "the aphoristic skill and wise experience of Bacon unite to form some of the most memorable and penetrating phrases in English." DNB indicates that this is an important edition, pointing out "the accuracy of [Wright's] text and the concise learning of its notes." A fine beautiful book for a gift or a library.

Title: The Vicar of Wakefield a tale supposed to be written by Himself

Beautiful green marbelized paper on the endpapers . Illustrated with etchings by AD Lalauze and an added portrait of Oliver Goldsmith by the title page . Both volumes are in perfect condition , vol 1 161 pages, vol 2 152 pages . The Vicar of Wakefield, subtitled A Tale, Supposed to be written by Himself, is a novel by Anglo-Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774). It was written from 1761 to 1762 and published in 1766. It was one of the most popular and widely read 18th-century novels among Victorians. The Vicar – Dr. Charles Primrose – lives an idyllic life in a country parish with his wife Deborah, son George, daughters Olivia and Sophia, and three other children. He is wealthy due to investing an inheritance he received from a deceased relative, and he donates the £35 that his job pays annually to the widows and orphans of local clergy. On the evening of George's wedding to wealthy Arabella Wilmot, the Vicar loses all his money through the bankruptcy of his merchant investor who has left town abruptly. The wedding is called off by Arabella's father, who is known for his prudence with money. George, who was educated at Oxford and is old enough to be considered an adult, is sent away to town. The rest of the family move to a new and more humble parish on the land of Squire Thornhill, who is known to be a womanizer. On the way, they hear about the dubious reputation of their new landlord. Also, references are made to the squire's uncle Sir William Thornhill, who is known throughout the country for his worthiness and generosity. A poor and eccentric friend, Mr. Burchell, whom they meet at an inn, rescues Sophia from drowning. She is instantly attracted to him, but her ambitious mother does not encourage her feelings. Then follows a period of happy family life, interrupted only by regular visits of the dashing Squire Thornhill and Mr. Burchell. Olivia is captivated by Thornhill's hollow charm; but he also encourages the social ambitions of Mrs. Primrose and her daughters to a ludicrous degree. Finally, Olivia is reported to have fled. First Burchell is suspected, but after a long pursuit Dr. Primrose finds his daughter, who was in fact deceived by Squire Thornhill. He planned to marry her in a mock ceremony and leave her shortly after, as he had done with several women before. When Olivia and her father return home, they find their house in flames. Although the family has lost almost all their belongings, the evil Squire Thornhill insists on the payment of the rent. As the vicar cannot pay, he is brought to prison. A series of dreadful developments follows. The vicar's daughter, Olivia, is reported dead, Sophia is abducted, and George too is sent to prison in chains and covered with blood, as he had challenged Thornhill to a duel when he had heard about his wickedness. Then Mr. Burchell arrives and solves all problems. He rescues Sophia, Olivia is not dead, and it emerges that Mr. Burchell is in reality the worthy Sir William Thornhill, who travels through the country in disguise. In the end, there is a double wedding: George marries Arabella, as he originally intended, and Sir William Thornhill marries Sophia. Squire Thornhill's servant turns out to have tricked him, and what the Squire thought to be a sham marriage of himself and Olivia is in fact valid. Finally, even the wealth of the vicar is restored, as the bankrupt merchant is reported found. The most beautiful set of books you could find , nice gift for an Antiquarian or a book collector or for your own library...

Title: Poems of Matthew Arnold
Author: Matthew Arnold
Publisher: Routledge
Price: 60.00
Description:
Matthew Arnold (24 December 1822 – 15 April 1888) was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. Matthew Arnold has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. Among the major Victorian writers, Matthew Arnold is unique in that his reputation rests equally upon his poetry and his poetry criticism. Only a quarter of his productive life was given to writing poetry, but many of the same values, attitudes, and feelings that are expressed in his poems achieve a fuller or more balanced formulation in his prose. Arnold is sometimes called the third great Victorian poet, along with Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and Robert Browning.[ This is a rare edition,in the Muse 's library.edited by Laurie Magnus ...it might be a first edition and limited to 5000 books. This book looks new but has been read. Cover has no visible wear. no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. The cover is marine blue with gold title and decoration on the spine. Published in the early 1900 (no date ) by Routledge , and 291 pages. . Deserved to be a collectible and set in a Library.

Title: East of Suez
Author: Rudyard Kipling
Publisher: MacMillan
Price: 125.00
Description:
Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay in December 1865. He returned to India from England shortly before his seventeenth birthday, to work as a journalist first on the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore, then on the Pioneer at Allahabad. The poems and stories he wrote over the next seven years laid the foundation of his literary reputation, and soon after his return to London in 1889 he found himself world-famous. Throughout his life his works enjoyed great acclaim and popularity, but he came to seem increasingly controversial because of his political opinions, and it has been difficult to reach literary judgments unclouded by partisan feeling. Donald Maxwell (14 April 1877 – 25 July 1936) was an English writer and illustrator, still notable for his topographical paintings. Maxwell trained in London at the Clapham School of Art, the University College London Slade School of Fine Art, and the Royal College of Art. In 1907, he married Fanny Eveline Marie Morgan (died 1954) and lived with her initially in a yacht moored on the River Thames at Southend on Sea named "Puffin". He also illustrated books by many other authors, including Hilaire Belloc and also Rudyard Kipling, to whom his mother was related. This first edition book is beautiful , edited in 1931 by Macmillan and Co.... It is a selection of Eastern verses from the Poetical works of Rudyard Kipling , and illustrated in Colour and Line by Donald Maxwell....Those illustrations are all very beautiful, some sunsets, ships, and cities of the Far east all deserving to be framed , but better kept in the book for conservation .... A very collectible book , in perfect condition, for almost 100 years, no writing, spotting or marking of any sort, 72 pages

Title: Men and Women
Author: Robert Browning
Publisher: G M Dent The Temple Classics edited by Israel Gollancz
Price: 36.00
Description:
Robert Browning (7 May 1812 – 12 December 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose dramatic monologues put him high among the Victorian poets. He was noted for irony, characterization, dark humour, social commentary, historical settings and challenging vocabulary and syntax. In Florence, probably from early in 1853, Browning worked on the poems that eventually comprised his two-volume Men and Women, for which he is now well known, although in 1855, when they were published, they made relatively little impact. This a beautiful little book with soft leather cover of undefinite color, gold design for the title, name and decoration, as well as a small owl on the front cover . Dated 1901 , being the third edition of Men and Women., published by J M Dent and Aldine House , 291 pages. Edited by Israel Gollancz for the Temple Classics. Title: 1914 and other Poems
Author: Rupert Brooke
Publisher: Sidgwick & Jackson
Price: 165.00
Description:
London: Sidgwick & Jackson Limited, 1915. First edition. Hardcover. This is a handsome, contemporary association copy of the first edition, first printing of Rupert Brooke’s (1887-1915) 1914 and Other Poems. One of Brooke’s most famous poems in this collection, “The Soldier”, appeared in A Magazine of Verse on 23 April 1915, while the war was still in its infantile stages, and the national sentiment of his poems could still be cherished. At that time Brooke was a member of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, but he would never see action. Not during his first deployment to the not-yet-hostile Antwerp area, nor during his second deployment to the Dardanelles in February 1915, a staging operation for the Gallipoli campaign that would begin that spring. During the latter voyage, Brooke contracted blood poisoning, presumably from an insect bite. He died onboard a ship in the Aegean Sea shortly after his poem appeared in A Magazine of Verse. That poem ends as follows: “If I should die, think only this of me: | That there’s some corner of a foreign field | That is for ever England A very collectible book , probably worth more as a first edition , but only sixth impression ( very likely July 1916 .. a couple of months after the author death) ...it's also a very moving book .condition , as new, 63 pages

Title: Notes towards a Definition of Culture
Author: Thomas S Eliot
Publisher: Faber & Faber
Price: 250.00
Description:
Thomas Stearns Eliot OM was a poet, essayist, publisher, playwright, literary critic and editor. Considered one of the 20th century's major poets, he is a central figure in English-language Modernist poetry. Through his trials in language, writing style, and verse structure, he reinvigorated English poetry. In Notes Towards the Definition of Culture, Mr. T. S. Eliot argues that a truly civilized society needs a class system as part of its basis. He is, of course, only speaking negatively. He does not claim that there is any method by which a high civilization can be created. He maintains merely that such a civilization is not likely to flourish in the absence of certain conditions, of which class distinctions are one. This opens up a gloomy prospect, for on the one hand it is almost certain that class distinctions of the old kind are moribund, and on the other hand Mr. Eliot has at the least a strong prima facie case. The essence of his argument is that the highest levels of culture have been gained only by small groups of people—either social groups or regional groups—who have been able to perfect their traditions over long periods of time. The most important of all cultural influences is the family, and family loyalty is strongest when the majority of people take it for granted to go through life at the social level at which they were born. Moreover, not having any precedents to go upon, we do not know what a classless society would be like. We know only that, since functions would still have to be diversified, classes would have to be replaced by “élites,” a term Mr. Eliot borrows with evident distaste from the late Karl Mannheim. the book is a First Edition from 1948 with the original dust jacket, very likely a first edition...the cover is a pale blue with lettering in gold , the condition is perfect , very clean, 124 pages .edited by Faber & Faber,

Title: Collected Poems of Thomas hardy
Author: Thomas hardy
Publisher: MacMillan
Price: 150.00
Description:
Thomas Hardy OM (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his native South West England. While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, he gained fame as the author of novels such as Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). During his lifetime, Hardy's poetry was acclaimed by younger poets (particularly the Georgians) who viewed him as a mentor. After his death his poems were lauded by Ezra Pound, W. H. Auden and Philip Larkin. Many of his novels concern tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances, and they are often set in the semi-fictional region of Wessex; initially based on the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom, Hardy's Wessex eventually came to include the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, Hampshire and much of Berkshire, in southwest and south central England. Two of his novels, Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Far from the Madding Crowd, were listed in the top 50 on the BBC's survey The Big Read. The book is a beautiful navy blue cloth cover soft paper book , with gilted name of author and Title, very nice deco ron the spine in art nouveau style and coat of Arms on top of book.Frontispiece with a portrait of Thomas hardy , all pages are covered with gold all around, 809 pages including index, very good condition, all around.
