Title: The Meditations
Author: Marcus Aureelius Antoninus
Publisher: Collins Clear-type
Price: 60.00
Description:This is a rare litlle book which I estimated from the 1930s but maybe younger .published by Collins Clear-type , and about the meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antonnus , roman Emperor . The extraordinary writings of Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180), the only Roman emperor to have also been a stoic philosopher, have for centuries been praised for their wisdom, insight and guidance by leaders and great thinkers alike. Never intended for publication, Meditations are the personal notes born from a man who studied his unique position of power as emperor while trying to uphold inner balance in the chaotic world around him. Boldly challenging many of our biggest questions, Aurelius wrestles with the divided self, considering the complexities of human nature, rationality and moral virtue, affirming its place as one of the most timeless, significant works of philosophy to date. The book is in solid condition for an older book , cover is leather imitation with alas a bit of paint in the back mainly , clean and easy to read for the inside of the book , portrait of Marcus Aurelius as frontis piec , 317 pages a small index of greek term translated.

Title: The Crown of Wild Olive and The Cestus of Aglaia
Author: John Ruskin
Publisher: J M Dent
Price: 45.00
Description:Ruskin, John. The Crown of Wild Olive & Cestus of Aglaia. London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd., 1923. pp. xvi, 217. 12mo. Burgundy stiff leather covers. Gilt lettering and ornaments to spine and front board, illustrated endpapers. The Crown of Wild Olive (1866, enlarged in 1873) collects some of the best specimens of Ruskin’s Carlylean manner, notably the lecture “Traffic” of 1864, which memorably draws its audience’s attention to the hypocrisy manifested by their choice of Gothic architecture for their churches but Neoclassical designs for their homes.

Title: Louise de la Valliere
Author: Alexandre Dumas
Publisher: Collins Clear-type
Price: 50.00
Description:Louise de la Vallière is the fourth book (or in some cases, the fifth – more on that later) in the series of d’Artagnan novels which began with The Three Musketeers. Looking at other readers’ reviews, this seems to be one of the least popular books in the series and I can understand why, even though I did enjoy it. In Louise de la Vallière, the story is picked up directly where the previous book, The Vicomte de Bragelonne, ended and follows all the romance and intrigue of the court of Louis XIV. Louise de la Vallière is the middle section of The Vicomte de Bragelonne, or, Ten Years After. Against a tender love story, Dumas continues the suspense which began with The Vicomte de Bragelonne and will end with The Man in the Iron Mask. Set during the reign of Louis XIV and filled with behind-the-scenes intrigue, the novel brings the aging Musketeers and d'Artagnan out of retirement to face an impending crisis within the royal court of France. The book is in fine condition for an older book , clear and clean , easy to read , no writing or spoiling of any kind , 666 pages , a few illustrations....

Title: Winterslow Essays and Characters written there
Author: William Hazlitt
Publisher: Henry Frowde
Price: 40.00
Description:The quality of the writing in this book is exceptional, lucid and engaging and challenging. You have to be on your toes to follow the arguments. It is also interesting to see what Hazlitt writes about. It's quite a lesson in cultural history. Many of the passages seem as if they were written about contemporary life rather than the 19th century. William Hazlitt (10 April 1778 – 18 September 1830) was an English essayist, drama and literary critic, painter, social commentator, and philosopher. He is now considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell. He is also acknowledged as the finest art critic of his age. Despite his high standing among historians of literature and art, his work is currently little read and mostly out of print. During his lifetime he befriended many people who are now part of the 19th-century literary canon, including Charles and Mary Lamb, Stendhal, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and John Keats. The book is a beautiful blue Leather book , in fine condition , silver lettering, very clean in and out , 213 pages.

Title: Advancement of Learning and the New Atlantis
Author: Bacon
Publisher: Henry Frowde
Price: 45.00
Description:English writer, scientist, philosopher, and politician Francis Bacon wrote a study called The Advancement of Learning. Bacon was born in London in 1561 to Sir Nicholas Bacon and Lady Anne Cooke Bacon and died in 1626. He went to school in Cambridge where he enrolled at Trinity College and then continued his studies in London at Gray's Inn. The Advancement of Learning was written by Bacon in 1605. It is among his first studies and contains two parts. The first part contains information about learning in general and its importance in everyday life. The second part of the study is expanded and focuses on human knowledge and how it can be improved. "The Advancement of Learning" is the only Bacon study that was published in English in addition to Latin (like all his other works). In the second part of his study, Bacon offers a solution to overcome the lack of human knowledge through practice and to correct all errors in knowledge. New Atlantis is an incomplete utopian novel by Sir Francis Bacon, published posthumously in 1626. It appeared unheralded and tucked into the back of a longer work of natural history, Sylva Sylvarum (forest of materials). In New Atlantis, Bacon portrayed a vision of the future of human discovery and knowledge, expressing his aspirations and ideals for humankind. The novel depicts the creation of a utopian land where "generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendour, piety and public spirit" are the commonly held qualities of the inhabitants of the mythical Bensalem. The plan and organisation of his ideal college, Salomon's House (or Solomon's House), envisioned the modern research university in both applied and pure sciences. The book as old as it is, is in perfect condition.leather bound , it was a School prize in 1918-19 for Latin and French ! solid, clean , no spoiling or writind , a great book , 275 pages

Title: Essays of Elia
Author: Charles Lamb
Publisher: Blackie and sons
Price: 25.00
Description:Essays of Elia is a collection of essays written by Charles Lamb; it was first published in book form in 1823, with a second volume, Last Essays of Elia, issued in 1833 by the publisher Edward Moxon. The essays in the collection first began appearing in The London Magazine in 1820 and continued to 1825. Lamb's essays were very popular and were printed in many subsequent editions throughout the nineteenth century. The personal and conversational tone of the essays has charmed many readers; the essays "established Lamb in the title he now holds, that of the most delightful of English essayists."[1] Lamb himself is the Elia of the collection, and his sister Mary is "Cousin Bridget." Charles first used the pseudonym Elia for an essay on the South Sea House, where he had worked decades earlier; Elia was the last name of an Italian man who worked there at the same time as Charles, and after that essay the name stuck. The book is in fair condition having problems with the spine which has been overworked , the inside is correct but for some light pencilling on some pages , nice read gilt art nouveau decor on front of the book , red leather cover. 336 pages.

Title: Walden
Author: Henry David Thoreau
Publisher: Blackie and sons
Price: 60.00
Description:Walden opens with a simple announcement that Thoreau spent two years in Walden Pond, near Concord, Massachusetts, living a simple life supported by no one. He says that he now resides among the civilized again; the episode was clearly both experimental and temporary. The first chapter, “Economy,” is a manifesto of social thought and meditations on domestic management, and in it Thoreau sketches out his ideals as he describes his pond project. He devotes attention to the skepticism and wonderment with which townspeople had greeted news of his project, and he defends himself from their views that society is the only place to live. He recounts the circumstances of his move to Walden Pond, along with a detailed account of the steps he took to construct his rustic habitation and the methods by which he supported himself in the course of his wilderness experiment. It is a chapter full of facts, figures, and practical advice, but also offers big ideas about the claims of individualism versus social existence, all interspersed with evidence of scholarship and a propensity for humor.... ... ... Thoreau announces that his project at the pond is over, and that he returned to civilized life on September 6, 1847. The revitalization of the landscape suggests the restoration of the full powers of the human soul, and Thoreau’s narrative observations give way, in the last chapter of Walden, to a more direct sermonizing about the untapped potential within humanity. In visionary language, Thoreau exhorts us to “meet” our lives and live fully. The book is well used and especially the spine has been overworked , but it is a beautiful little red book with plenty of gold decor (art nouveau ) , as well as red printing to follow the chapters ...the inside of the book is clean and solid , no markings, 410 pages ... portrait of Thoreau on title pages.

Title: Essays of Travel
Author: Robert Louis Stevenson
Publisher: Chatto and Windus
Price: 45.00
Description:Robert Louis Stevenson (born Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson; 13 November 1850 – 3 December 1894) was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet and travel writer. He is best known for works such as Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Kidnapped and A Child's Garden of Verses. Born and educated in Edinburgh, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble for much of his life, but continued to write prolifically and travel widely in defiance of his poor health. As a young man, he mixed in London literary circles, receiving encouragement from Andrew Lang, Edmund Gosse, Leslie Stephen and W. E. Henley, the last of whom may have provided the model for Long John Silver in Treasure Island. In 1890, he settled in Samoa where, alarmed at increasing European and American influence in the South Sea islands, his writing turned away from romance and adventure fiction toward a darker realism. He died of a stroke in his island home in 1894 at age 44. A celebrity in his lifetime, Stevenson's critical reputation has fluctuated since his death, though today his works are held in general acclaim. In 2018, he was ranked, just behind Charles Dickens, as the 26th-most-translated author in the world. this book is perfect all around : solid leather bound , very clean and clear for reading , was a Prize for Latin in 1919-20 in the Royal Grammar School of Newcasthe-on-tyne .... nice for your collectible library , 230 pages

In 2018, he was ranked, just behind Charles Dickens, as the 26th-most-translated author in the world. Virginibus Puerisque (1881) was the first collection of Stevenson’s essays. Containing what would have been regarded as personal essays in the tradition of Lamb and Hazlitt, the volume brought together essays previously published in the prestigious Cornhill Magazine (“Walking Tours” and “Virginibus Puerisque” [1876]; “On Falling in Love” and “Apology for Idlers” [1877]; “Crabbed Age and Youth”, “Aes Triplex”, “English Admirals” and “Child’s Play” [1878]; “Truth of Intercourse” [1879]) as well as essays printed inMacmillan’s (“Ordered South” [1874]) and London (“A Plea for Gas Lamps”, “Pan’s Pipes” and “El Dorado” [1878]), and the previously unpublished “Some Portraits by Raeburn” and the second part of “Virginibus Puerisque”. The essays promote a spirit of playfulness in defiance of both the hardships of human life and the restrictions imposed by bourgeois Philistinism. The volume did not sell well but had a good critical reception, confirming the author of Inland Voyage (1878) and Travels with a Donkey (1879) as one of the rising stars on the literary scene, notable for his youthful high spirits and elegant, if sometimes too showy, literary style. beautiful little book by Chatto & windus , als the spine has been partially damged and probabbly difficult to fix , but the reading part is perfect as well as the front and back covers in leather burgundy with red lettering , Clean and solid inside, 193 pages.

Title: The Diary of Samuel Pepys Esquire
Author: Samuel Pepys, Lord Braybrooke
Publisher: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton
Price: 45.00
Description:Undated (likely very early 20th-century) reprint of the 1825 first edition of the diary, as edited by Lord Braybrooke; includes Braybrooke's preface. Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. listed as UK publisher; US published given as Charles Scribner's Sons. Includes index; 920 pages. Title given as per title page; cover shows only Pepys' Diary (unknown if published with a dust jacket). Samuel Pepys 23 February 1633 – 26 May 1703) was an English diarist and naval administrator. He served as administrator of the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament and is most famous for the diary he kept for a decade. Pepys had no maritime experience, but he rose to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and King James II through patronage, diligence, and his talent for administration. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. The detailed private diary that Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669 was first published in the 19th century and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War, and the Great Fire of London. The diary was written in one of the many standard forms of shorthand used in Pepys' time, in this case called tachygraphy, and devised by Thomas Shelton. It is clear from its content that it was written as a purely personal record of his life and not for publication, yet there are indications that Pepys took steps to preserve the bound manuscripts of his diary. He wrote it out in fair copy from rough notes, and he also had the loose pages bound into six volumes, catalogued them in his library with all his other books, and is likely to have suspected that eventually someone would find them interesting ...! The book is very interesting indeed, but its unperfect condition is a bit a bore. the covers were detached and have been glued again , the text is complete , but to be saved as a classic collectible it should be repaired by a professional. A great reading book in spite of that .

These volumes are leather bound but a bit tired and have a temporary repair , which could be redone but they are complete , clear and clean for reading . The Sketch Book, in full The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., short-story collection by Washington Irving, first published in 1819–20 in seven separate parts. Most of the book’s 30-odd pieces concern Irving’s impressions of England, but six chapters deal with American subjects. Of these the tales “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle” have been called the first American short stories, although both are actually Americanized versions of German folktales. In addition to the stories based on folklore, the collection contains travel sketches, literary essays, and miscellany. The Sketch Book was a celebrated event in American literary history. The collection was the first American work to gain international literary success and popularity. Its unprecedented success allowed Irving to devote himself to writing. Washington Irving, (born April 3, 1783, New York, N.Y., U.S.—died Nov. 28, 1859, Tarrytown, N.Y.), U.S. author, called the “first American man of letters.” He began his career as a lawyer but soon became a leader of the group that published Salmagundi (1807–08), a periodical containing whimsical essays and poems.
