BookId: B2-0011 Title: Eros Magazine 1 to 4 plus trial Author: Ralph Ginzburg Price: 500.00 Description:Eros Magazine, Inc., New York, 1962. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. It was the early 60s, and the Sexual Revolution was just beginning. Eros Magazine made its contribution via a quarterly magazine with a run of just four issues before being shut down for violating federal obscenity laws. Focusing on love and sex, the magazine was actually quite literary in nature and seems tame by today's standards. ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ralph Ginzburg (1929-2006) was an American author, editor, publisher and photo-journalist. He studies journalism at Baruch College in New York and began his career as a journalist by serving as editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, continuing through the Army by editing the post newspaper, once out of service working for various media companies. His first publication was "An Unhurried View of Erotica" it examines examples of English erotic literature in an interpretive and explanatory context (Wikipedia). ***ABOUT THE ISSUES: All four issues contain essays and photographs which capture the essence of the 1960s. Some of the most notable contributions include the following: issue Number One includes a short story by Guy de Maupassant with drawings by Edgar Degas; Number Two a photo essay about JFK, a short story by Ray Bradbury, and the first publication in a magazine a short story by Mark Twain entitled "1601"; Number Three centers on an 18-page photo shoot of the recently deceased Marilyn Monroe and an extract from "Fanny Hill"; and Number Four an eight-page "photographic tone poem"' titled "Black and White in Color", featuring a nude couple, with an African-American man and a European-American girl. ***ABOUT THE OBSCENITY CHARGES: charges were brought after the publication of the fourth (and final) issue by the U.S. Attorney General, Robert Kennedy. The court ruled that the violation was not in the materials themselves, but the implication in the advertising for the materials that the subject matter was obscene. Ginzburg ultimately served eight months in jail, even after public outcry against the conviction and public support for Mr. Ginzburg, most notably by Allen Ginsberg who traveled to Washington and picketed the Supreme Court building. ***DESCRIPTION: Pictorial paper boards, two volumes matte and two glossy, pictorial endpapers that artistically support the subject matter, each volume contains essays, illustrations, and photographs. Pagination: Number One, 80 pages; Numbers Two, Three, and Four, 96 pages. ***CONDITION: Overall the four volumes are in near fine condition with strong, square text blocks, solid hinges, and all pages are entirely free of prior owner markings. To Which is added the rare issue of Tract magazine which contains a portfolio of the most beautiful Art from Eros , together with the TRUE story of how the magazine was suppressed .
